We found that the portage had been cleared of many of the smaller fallen trees, but there were still a few of those three-foot-diameter century-old white pines over the trail. In some places it required pushing and sliding packs and canoes over the blowdown, then crawling underneath to get to the other side to pull gear through the tangle. Thank goodness this is a very short portage!
The shot above shows us putting into the river above Baker. You can see the tangles of trees that had been pushed aside to clear the path. As we shoved off we could hear the sounds of chainsaws to the north....inside the BW! We knew something had changed......
